China-aided 250 m³/d Seawater Desalination Equipment in Kiribati Officially Commissioned
Recently, the China-aided 250 m³/d seawater desalination project in Kiribati designed and provided by Fenghai Company, was successfully commissioned and officially put into operation in South Tarawa. This project, which embodies the deep friendship between China and Kiribati and responds to urgent livelihood needs marks a significant step toward resolving the country’s long-standing freshwater shortage. It also provides a replicable “Chinese Solution” for Pacific island nations facing the challenges of climate change.
Aid across the Ocean, Delivering Sweet Springs
Kiribati lies thousands of kilometers from China, requiring a three-day journey with two flight transfers. Upon arrival, Mr. Pan Changwei, Director of the Engineering Department, immediately devoted himself to the intensive installation and commissioning work. Despite the extremely hot and humid conditions, he rose to the challenge, working over 10 hours a day without rest days. His strong sense of responsibility and professional dedication ensured the project’s high-quality, on-time delivery, earning high praise from the owner.
“Water of Life” Brings Change, Technology Delivers Hope
At the project site, water tankers and local residents came in droves, their joy was written all over their faces. After receiving systematic training from the company, a local operator was able to independently start and shut down the equipment in just one day. She shared her excitement: “In the past, we relied on rainwater and limited well water—neither the supply nor the quality could be guaranteed. This system has completely changed our lives. Thanks to China’s technology, funding, and generous support, we now have real ‘water of life’!” The project greatly enhances both the stability and quality of freshwater supply in the South Tarawa region.
